My 8 year old third grader has a lot of problems in school( i.e. swithching letters, can’t comprehend what he’s reading, reading out loud, spelling is his worst! and other things) I talked with his teacher about having him tested for dyslexia. That was 2 months ago. I finally heard from her today and was told “he was tested by the reading teacher and did not score low enough for remedial reading.” (Now this is all new to me, but I think he should have been tested for more than remedial reading.) Also that “there is no program in our district for dyslexia and there is nothing more she can tell me.” Can somebody please help, I just don’t know where to start. I thought the school had to at least test for learning disabilities. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Shelley
Re: How do I get my son tested
I don’t know if it’s still there, but on the ScwaabLearning.com site, they use to have a great section on early detection and what actions to take if you suspect. They actually had a sample letter to send to the school, guidelines, what to expect etc.
I’m going through a similar situation at this time. Ours was small muscle motor. But that is just the tip of the ice berg. A formal letter to the principal asking for a formal assessment/evaluation for specific learning disabilities has finally gotten the ball rolling for us. Try putting in writing your concerns and that you want testing!!! Best wishes!!
