Has anyone used or known anyone to go to a Davis Facilitator and learn the Davis techniques? Is it worth the money? What were the results?
Re: Davis Techniques (The Gift of Dyslexia)
This is an approach that seems to be extremely helpful for some, and I have seen posts from parents who said it was a major turning point in the child’s life. However, I have seen many other posts from parents who were disappointed, saying there was an immediate boost in self-esteem but no long-lasting gains in reading.
My own view is that it is helpful for a minority of dyslexic kids who have a specific kind of problem involving orientation. However, many dyslexic kids do not have this problem.
You might want to do a search of archived messages on the DyslexiaSupport email list (http://www.groups.yahoo.com) about Davis. There are quite a few messages about it there.

G’sMomma: if you go to the forum at www.dyslexiatalk.com you will find an active group of posters who hang out there, many of whom are parents of dyslexic kids. Some have used Davis methods at home with their kids and had great success, others have been through counselling with a professional Davis provider and their success stories may help you with your search even more. At the Davis website, www.dyslexia.com, you will find contact directions for Davis providers in your area — you might want to speak to one or more of them.
Many Davis providers have sped or psych backgrounds and got into this because they found Davis methods useful for their own children, their students, or their clients — and in some cases themselves! This method is not a quick fix, but for a motivated learner, the results can be astonishing.
My son ( age 8) has been helped a great deal by the reading techniques (working from the book at home) and we plan a program with a provider this spring or early summer to work on dysgraphia and sequencing issues. Good luck! I hope to see you on the forum…you will be very welcome! The forum is for support of dyslexics and ‘friends of dyslexics’ whether or not they are using Davis methods, by the way! ALL who wish to learn and improve their lexic skills/attentional issues/understanding of dyslexia are very welcome…
