I am a pediatric speech therapist (speeech language patholigist) and am interested in doing online consultation and tutoring for a low fee: my specialty is learning disabilities esp. dyslexia and adhd. I am wondering what parents might be looking for in such an area? Would you tend to do this more if you lived in a rural area, if you homeschooled and needed extra help, if you couldn’t find a tutor in person? I specialize in finding out area of breakdown for kids with help from local therapists of course and planning programs accordingly. What kind of things do you look for in a learning disability consultant or tutor? Thanks.
Re: online consultation and tutoring
Online consultation poses some challenges because you will not have the opportunity to actually observe the child. But, when our son was very young my husband and I took a course called HANEN parent training which helped us to learn techniques to help our son’s language development. It was a very worthwhile program. I would suspect there are many parents who do not have local access to a program like HANEN that would be willing to take an online course with personal coaching and email coorespondence with a SLP. HANEN was an 8 week program, where we videotaped sessions with our child, then discuessed the tapes with our group and coaches who were SLP. A modified program like this on-line would also appeal to parents who do not have insurance coverage or resources for expensive speech therapy. Good Luck.
Re: online consultation and tutoring
I am a special education teacher in GA. I just moved here from SC. I have trouble with the “definition” area of learning disabilities. According to what I know, a parent and teacher can sit down and decide that the child is LD… however, here they want 15 point discrepency. Could you help me with this? I can’t find any websites to help me with the “definition”.
Re: online consultation and tutoring
It varies from state to state. I worked in Indiana and it was 17 points between IQ and achievement testing. In Ohio they want 30 points (ridiculous no?). To me, a learning disabiity is quite simply when something a child struggles with impacts their learning. You do need some stadardization because people’s subjective views vary tremendously but it should never be the only criteria although often it is.
Hello,
I look for someone to interpet the IEP test scores and what kind of remediation by daughter needs. This frankly has never been done.
