spelling

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 8th grade son has improved significantlly in his writing skills but his spelling still leaves a lot to be desired. When he started his LD writing class in 7th grade he had letter reversals, could not write a paragraph, neverless a sentence. He had no sense of grammer ect. Now in 8th he can spit out all the grammer rules and apply most of them except when it comes to spelling. With him entering high school next year I was wondering what type of accomodation I should ask for since spell check does not catch all his errors, or don’t have a suggestion for spelling what he is looking for. Examples of recent spelling errors-lreaned for learned, gril for girl, how for who, most his words have the correct letters but in the wrong order, or they are spelled as they sound. My youngest son benefited from the program sequential spelling so I tried this with my oldest son he would get them right when we did them but a few days later would be back to the mixing up the order of letters. Any thoughts would be much appreciatted.

What about Sequential Spelling?

You may want to investigate programs with word prediction capability like Don Johnson’s Co-Writer - especially if his editing skills are better than his production skills. I would keep working on the spelling though- for lots of kids it is the last thing to “click”. Keeping a personal spelling dictionary with words that he uses frequently and often mispells can be helpful also for when he is not near the computer.

I’d go more slowly and do more practice w/ the spelling; he’s had a lot m ore practice doing them wrong than doing them right, so it takes longer to fix.
