What major is teaching to LD under?

It is usually under special education. I had a concentration in LD. Schools have different situations for the masters options.

You would take courses in the Education Department of most schools, with major emphasis on Special Education.

I am beginning master’s classes at a college in VA. The program there is a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, with your choice of concentration and subsequent endorsement in two areas (LD, MR, ED).

So does this career require a masters or is that optional?

Certification requires that certain courses be taken ( requirements differ form state to state), but a master’s is not required to teach in a regular public school. I have a master’s in special ed. and took the courses for LD and EMD certification (was already certified in hearing impaired and elementary ed.).

Depends on the system (some are moving to having everybody get a Master’s) — often you can start teaching while you’re finishing up requirements.
_Please_ look beyond education courses for your education. Join the professional orgs and look for specific training. I’d also recommend that you shop carefully for a school if you can. When I looked for a place to get an Instructional Technology degree, I cruised the educational abstracts (http://ericir.syr.edu) and found articles I thought were interesting and looked to see where the authors were from, and went there. (It also made getting admitted easier, I suspect.) Of course, having already taught and knowing what I was interested in made that infinitely easier than it would have bene befoer I’d been in the classroom!

In Florida you have to have your BA in Special Education to teach, along with your certification.
