autism?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello to everyone that can help,

I recenlty visited the Autism website out of curiosity concerning my daughter. I read over the typical symptoms and found one on senory impairment? Does she have this IF: wants to touch and handle her food and anything else which makes a bit of a mess at times or lines things up on plate neatly infact I thought for a while she was suffering from obsessive conplusive disorder but no I asked her doctor and we ruled that out. She does have motor planning and mild balence issues. And if she does have senory impairment who deals with this? her OT? btw she doesn’t appear to fall under any of the other symptoms other than has difficulty with transistions.

Unfortuanlty my own email is down so I can only communicate thru the broad at least for a few days.

Thanks to anyone who can give me advice.

Janine

No. SI dysfunction (sensory impairment) is a part of autism but it can exsiit separately from it.I reommend the book The OUt of Sync Child. Its user friendly.

An OT deals with SI issues. I too recommend the book the Out of Sync Child. There are OT’s who specialize in SI issues. I would take your daughter to one.

Cheryl, do you have any suggestions for writing programs for children with autism spectrum disorders? My son is in 3rd grade and his hand writing is SO bad it looks more like a preschoolers writing. His most recent testing shows he has difficulty with motor planning, spacing, and sequencing and I am sure this contributes to his very poor writing skills. He has never recieved OT or any other intervention for his writing or other motor skills. He will be 10 in April and still can not tie his shoes I am quessing this is also related to his poor motor planning and below average skills in mimicing visual processes. Any suggestions would be appreciatted. Thanks.

Request an OT evaluation for your son.

Cheryl,

Is there a website that talks a little more about OT? My daughter does have one at the school but I would love to learn more about it so I can help her here at home and frankly ask the right questions. Does “out of sync” talk about OT? just wondering.. ..

Thanks,

Janine

You might try the American Occupational Therapy Association, don’t have URL offhand but should be easy to find. Yes, the book does a great job of talking about OT.

Thanks Beth,

I do have her seeing an OT at school. I will start asking some more questions and perhaps give her a call now that i know a little more. I’m just beginning to unfold the mystries of my daughters disability. Frankly, she should have been seeing someone in the 2nd grade but they just started OT in the fourth grade and she is now in the 5th. I just didn’t know that much about it when she was younger. I have so much to learn.

My question for anyone is what excatly IS sensory impariment? and do childern with motor planning issues usally have sensory impairment or are they the same.

Thanks to everyone!

Ok, I’ll answer the latter question, sensory issues and motor planning issues can go together but they do not have to. You can have one or the other. A sensory impairment is a disability in the body’s ability to regulate information coming on from the senses in the appropriate way. It is neurological. The cause is not known. A book that explains it well is called The Out of Sync Child, most big bookstores or amazon will have it. Its the best source out there that makes sense.
