Well, Natasha, I don’t think you mean a mother giving birth at 55 years.

If this helps, I was 37 and husband was 40 when our 1st and only child was born. He is 17 now and has been classified as speech, impaired, then multiply handicapped and finally learning disabled.

Judging from the mom’s of those in his class with LD’s, I am much more patient and am able to see the “big picture.” (It is more important to do homework than, say, clean up his room. And if the room rarely gets cleaned but he uses his time to work on deficits, that’s fine. Who cares?)

My husband and I were heartbroken, but practical when we realized at age 2 that he needed special ed help. We weren’t embarassed and didn’t have a problem with a *label* if he got the services he needed. Also, the various monies that we need to or want to spend to make sure he has postive extracurricular activities is not begrudged and is not a sacrifice because we had 9 years of eating at 5 star restaurants, vacationing, seeing Broadway shows, etc., way before his arrival in our lives.

I don’t know if this is what you are looking for and I hope it helps. If you find women who have given birth at age 55, my hat is off to them. “You’re a better *man* than I am.”
