private tutors

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does any one know the best way to go about finding a private tutor for my son? I dont want to send him to the public schools summer school program. I feel he gets very little out of it. He is in LD in school for math and reading. He is in 4th grade this year and I would do anything in this world to help him get caught up, if thats possible.We live in Wisconsin. We did try the Sylvan Learning center 2 summers ago. It helped but it was a long drive from our home which made it impossible to continue thru the schoool year and was also very expensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would start by asking teachers at your school.
Many times teachers are looking for extra income
over the summer. Young teachers with no children
yet might have the free time and like the extra
income.

Do you have a university nearby? You could look for
students between their junior and senior year.
Or you might be able to find a new grad who has
the summer free.
Try an ad in the student newspaper or contact the
dept. of ed. at the university.

Then maybe you could arrange a meeting between the
tutor and the SPED teacher to go over what your
child should be working on this summer.

I am a private tutor and many of my referrals come from private schools in my area and from neuropsychologists. I’d suggest calling up any and all in your area. Private schools often don’t have services available for their own students onsite so they refer their students to a list of tutors. You can ask for that list. Neuropsychologists, by virtue of their testing students, often have a list of tutors whom they recommend to parents.
