Bad treatment at school and W-J Results

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have had a very tough time having a good working relationship with my sons school since requesting an IEP before school started this year.

In Nov., they did a screening and say “Nope.” I disagreed and asked for a referal for a full evaluation. At the referal meeting the Spec. Ed. teacher rushed me through the paper signing telling me that she had 5 minutes and not letting me ask questions or anything. A week later I receive forms home with a note telling me they “forgot” to give them to me at the meeting.

I asked that I be notified when my son’s testing began so that I could work with him on not being so stressed. They didn’t call me, I found out by accident.

So, finally the testing was done and I called the psych. She was nice and said she had left a copy of all the test results at the school. I called the school and requested a copy of the results. As per usual, I received no return phone call. So I called back and left another message. Well, this time the Spec. Ed. called me back and gave me a curt “No” then HUNG UP on me.

Anyway, I called the Director of the School District, and by the end of the afternoon I had my son’s test results.

Anyone here familiar with the W-J and how to interpret?

Do you mind posting them here? Many of us are probably familiar with WJ results and will certainly try to help you. Did they give an IQ test as well? You have to have an IQ score to compare with the achievement scores to determine if a child has a learning disability.

Whoa! You mean the school psych didn’t give you an interpretation? Of course under the circumstances, I’m not sure I would trust their opinion. The folks on this board will end up being a lot more helpful to you. Good luck!

The psychologist should have scheduled a staffing to review the documentation. Not only does your child receive an achievement test (WJ, Woodcock Johnson, I would assume) but he/she should also have received an IQ test. In addition there should have been teacher reports and information from other testing - state, local etc. If your account is accurate in it’s sequence, your district has some serious problems. Keep working on getting the information you have the legal right to. You may bring someone to the staffing, if you feel they would help you advocate for your rights. Speaking of rights, request a copy of your parental rights - you should already have received this. I’ll bet this request will get their attention!
