I have recently requested an IEE a public expence and the school gave me a list of places to choose from. I am in Missouri and I really don’t know much about any of these places. I know there are parents here from Missouri and I was wondering if they knew anything about any of these doctors. Dr. Marc Falkenhain at Cardinal Glennon Childrens Hospital in St. Louis and Dr. Jyostna Nair at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia Missouri and Peter Shaughnessy at Children and Family Psychological Services also in Columbia Missouri. Also, there is a Steve Wallace at Missouri University Assessment Clinic in Columbia Missouri.
Someone also told me that sence my daughter is recieving special sevices that because her scores are so low that she should have an aide that should help her with her work in a regular classroom and in a resource room. I have not been able to find this in any of the Missouri laws on special education. The way it was explained to me was it is a new law that was passed here recently.Has anybody heard of this new law or know where I can find out if it is true or not.
Re: Doctors in Missouri
I would go with a children’s hospital—whichever has the “best” reputation, if you don’t know the physicians. I will tell you that we had a very bad experience picking from a list with our child when he was a preschooler. We, rather foolishly, picked the closest place and they tried to tell us it was a “parenting” problem. Less than a year later his preschool teacher suggested testing (he had not been in preschool for the initial testing) and told us to take him to the children’s hospital. They diagnosed him as speech impaired there. Now the children’s hospital was on the initial list—it was just less convenient so we didn’t go there. Don’t make our mistake!!!
Wendy, you may not find anyone here who can assist you. However, sounds like you may have some good choices. You might call each Dr. and try to get some questions answered before hand. Get a feel for whom you would like to work with.
The district has recommended qualified people who will do a proper eval. Despite the fact that some of our posters believe the school will send you to someone they have in their “pocket,” this is largely not true. I have received totally bogus evals. done privately where the Dr. has given two tests and drawn an incredible number of conclusions and diagnoses. I am not kidding. I have seen at least 2 of these bogus evals. this year. There are a number of unethical, money grubbing private psychs out there who will basically give you what you want based on questionable assessments.
Take any one you like. Usually doctors associated with a children’s hospital are in touch and experienced.
