I think I heard this book mentioned here, something about
an Oprah show and this fellow was on it?
Found the book yesterday at B&N
A Mind at a Time by Mel Levine, MD
I am really enjoying it!
He is the kind of doctor you wish you had
run into in the first place.
He uses a lot of ancetodal stories, which I know
some academics don’t like, but our children are
so much more that a datum on a bar graph.
I would really recommend this book to any
parent just now facing the news, ‘your child has
a learning disability’.
He covers, what he calls, the eight neurodevelopmental systems -
Attention, memory language, spatial ordering, sequential, motor,
higher thinking and social.

Re: book ~ A Mind at at Time
I haven’t read the book but Mel Levine is just great! I’m glad that he’s getting the nat’l attention he deserves.
You can visit his website at:
http://www.schwablearning.org
I’ve listened to the series of 12 tapes Dr. Levine’s made. Each tape is an interview with a nationally renowned expert in various fields of work with children who have learning issues. They’re wonderful.

They probably have a lot of things by Mel Levine at the Schwab site, but his site is called All Kinds of Minds and is at:
http://www.allkindsofminds.org/default.asp
Once there, go to the Learning Base page to find info on many different problems that interfere with learning.
Re: book ~ A Mind at at Time
We just ordered A mind at a Time. I f you have young children( my sons is 9,LD) then Mel Levine’s book All Kinds of Minds is good for the kids to read to understand that there are other children who also think and process differently. We live in North Carolina and the center that Mel Levine has here is worth a trip and an appointment. He is really great!!!. They are concentrating on teaching teachers how to understand the kids with a difference. Last year in June they had seminars for teachers that he also let parents attend. I’m not sure if they are going to let parents participate this year. There is a cost involved but I’m not sure how much. If you want answers for your family I recommend going to North Carolina and seeing Dr. Levine. There is a wait of about 9 months if you want to see him, he also has a great trained staff who you can see sooner. Check out his web site at allkindsofminds.

Re: book ~ A Mind at at Time
Several people recommended this book to me after it was featured on the Oprah Show. I am still reading it but have already found it very helpful. I am going to recommend it to my son’s current teacher - she has been the most helpful one so far and is always asking me for resources to better help these kids in general.
I just started reading it myself and I have to say I am ready to pack the family up and take a drive to North Carolina.
It is obvious that he really cares about kids and wants them to do their best, I wish I could say that about all the LD related people I have to deal with!
I second that recommendation, it is a great book.
