Here, in Washington state, our high schoolers are
required to have two years of a foreign language to
go on to college.
For those of you who have dyslexic kids or in
ed-ese specific learning disability in reading and
writing, what language was easiest for your child
to take?
What grade did your child start, 9th, 10th or 11th?
Was anyone able to get it waived for graduation
and still attend college?
My personal feeling is that a dyslexic person should
not be required to take a foreign language unless they
want to.
I have an adult dyslexic friend who learned to read,
write (after a fashion) and speak German in her
early 40s, which impresses the heck out of me, but
she also did it while living for two years in Germany.

Re: foreign language requirement for high schoolers
2 years of foreign language is also required in high school in MN. My son who is a junior had an F in spanish, but got a A+ in American Sign Language. I recommend giving it a try!!
Re: IEP
When the modification of “requirement for foreign language waived” is written in your child’s IEP, it is not a requirement.
Two years of a foreign language are required at my son’s HS. He is junior this year and is taking ASL (American Sign language) which happens to be a choice at his school. It isn’t easy for him but I think any other foreign language would have been a lot more difficult…So we were lucky that that is a choice for him….I worried about it as well.
