Performance questions

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello, My son has been tested twice over the last 4 years. He has an IEP for written expression. His strong areas are verbal communication, good knowledge base, comprehends in the written form and verbal form too. He has the ability to infer understanding in all things he does. His weaknesses center on writing, organization, and lacks the skill of perserverence. Perhaps I am wishing on a star, but my goal is to build patience and the ability to stay on task until results are acceptable. What do you think? Am I trying to build on something that is out of wack and impossible? Sarah

I don’t think so. I don’t know your son at all, but I have seen these th ings develop, through time, with patience and consistency and persistence.

Never impossible but such things can take time. My approach with my own children and my students is to choose one of those three admirable goals and to give it highest priority.

As we are all more likely to persevere when organized, I’d start with helping him stay organized. I’d even go through his binder/backpack with him every night until it was under control. Some people simply cannot stay organized with constant and consistent help. They need to be supported as they slowly learn the process that is organization.

If you’ve never looked into Mel Levine’s book Educational Care, you might want to. He can have helpful suggestions in there.

Good luck.
