Tomatis method for APD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son has ADP, and while he is keeping up in school, it is a huge effort for him. He can read, however his comprehension is poor. He gets regular help on the resource room, and with that he is able to keep up. He is distracted in the classroom because of everything else around him. He has always talked about his ears “not hearing”. We have looked into the Tomatis method and I’m unsure of it. Does anyone have any positive and also negative feedback for me on what your experiences were? I understand that there is a “difficult” time that occurs midpoint in the program. Does anyone know about that?

Hi Sally,
My daughter has been doing the Tomatis method for the past several months.
Yesterday was her 23rd and final sesssion.
I’m not sure how to tell you everything in less than a million words! This has been an extremely interesting journey. My daughter’s behaviour, physical
self (playing soccer, etc), communication skills and short-term memory have
all improved. It’s weird though, because during the sessions these things
come and go … get better, then worse, then better. We didn’t experience any really bad points midway, but I understand it’s possible. It’s important to let whoever is doing the sessions know what’s going on, because somehow they change the frequencies and the behaviour changes. Right now I am
wondering if the changes will last, but only time will tell. I can tell you I’m
very happy we did this because it has shown both of us the potential inside her.
Also, this is not cheap. We live in the Denver metro area & the people we
go to for the sessions are terrific. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
