re: wilson reading program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am thinking of having my eight year old dyslexic son tutored on the Wilson reading program. I would like feedback from any of you who have used this program.

They use the Wilson Reading System with my son at school, although not near as often as I would like. But anyway, he has made more progress with that system, in the 1 1/2 years they have used it than he did in 6 years of instruction in just a regular LD classroom..He even told me, when they use that Wilson thing, I feel like I’m learning to read. I think it is great. I have tried to find a tutor in our area, but have been unable to.
I highly recommend this system. I first found out about it from calling Marshall University, they have a program for dyslexic students. The lady I talked to told me she has only known of one student who didn’t learn to read with this program, and he has much deeper problems than just being dyslexic.
Good Luck!!!!!

I’ve not experienced it first hand but a close friend with an LD 3rd grader has been delighted with the program. Her daughter has been in it since K and has made enormous strides. I believe many private schools consider this the program of choice (according to my sister in law-the principal of a private school in MD)

WIlson REading is a structured multisensory reading program that meets the Orton-Gillingham requirements to be called an O-G program (as opposed to being “based on” OG). The criteria are pretty strict (lots of very good programs don’t meet them).
