I need help. I have a son who is 12 years old in the 6th grade and has LD in reading. He is not able to read on his level. We just had to EOG testing and he made a 1 (138) in reading, he is very good in math and was able to make a high 3 in it. I don’t know what to do. I have tried the centers for reading but all they have done is taken our money. Can anyone relate to this?
Re: Can't Read
Do you have access to a Lindamood bell facility near you? They are pricey but they work when the others fail. The website is LindamoodBell.com. Their programs worked miracles for my son who was barely functional in anything.
Don’t feel too bad about the other places, many parents I know spent lots of money and were misled by their ads. They may hire credentialed teachers but those type of teachers are not knowledgeable and or enough to understand what LD kids REALLY need.
Re: Can't Read
Almost all children can learn to read well with PhonoGraphix. You can learn how to teach your child by reading Reading Reflex by Geoffrey and Carmen McGuiness or you can find a certified PhonoGraphix tutor to work with your son. Most children don’t need Lindamood-Bell. A good speech/language pathologist who knows PhonoGraphix and Lindamood Bell could screen your child and determine what he needs. Phonographix has a web site called www.readamerica.net
You can get tutor referrals through them, many of whom are SLPs.
Good luck!
wait just one minute!
What is the school doing for your son?? Has he been formally evaluated? Does he have an IEP?
BY LAW,they are obilgated to HELP your son. If he is not progressing what are they going to do to help him? If he is a nonreader how do they help him in his other classes?
Please tell me he has accomodations in his classroom enviroment. WHat reading program are they using, and if this one isn’t working what reading program are they going to try instead?
Yes all the above programs can work, but dang it,the school is suppose to be doing something!!!
Most ‘centers’ are set up to help normal kids catch up.
They are not set up to deal with dyslexic kids (or in
educational-ese - kids with specific learning disabilities
in reading and writing).
One on one tutoring works best with my son
and I provide the tutoring - we work together
well and I am a reading/writing person.
He, on the other hand, could tutor me in math!
Try posting on the teaching reading board
http://www.ldonline.org/bulletin_boards/tr.html
lots of good information there.
