Could ds be NLD?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I just recently, I noticed some information on NLD and Asperger’s ? Looking back over the life of my 15 yo son , I believe he may hve been misdignosed. Orginally he was labeled ADD and placed on medication, however had many side affects with the various medications. Eventually we completely eliminated the medication and began homeschooling him. He is a description of my son:

sweet and caring
Gets along with those at least 2yrs younger than himself.
Constantly interrupts conversations
When trying to give him instructions, he hears only the first word or two and
immediately tries to go off and do the job.
Loves to read, but cannot type or write compostions
Has a creative mind, but have trouble expressing ideas verbally or written
Has aslight speech lisps( this doen’ t seem to match tje conditons of NLD)
Memory is an encyclopedia on history particularly military battles
Loves outdoor activites espically those that are a little more daring(white water
rafting etc.)
In math struglles with simple multiplication figures, miswrites problems, forgets
to add on any carry overs.
Does not undrstand body language
Doesn’t think before talking
Realize you may get hurt in some situations.

Sorry this is so long, but I Would like to know if it worthwhile to have him assessed and who should asses him/I

I would try a neuropsychologist, I think.
Or at least call one up and ask if they can diagnose
the condition(s) you are concerned about.

My good friend has two sons with Aspergers.
Her older son is eligible for some social service
funds as a dependent adult.

He is getting training in computers, he is very,
very bright in this area.
But his mother doesn’t see him living on his
own unless he gets married.
