Hold Them Accountable

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am angry and frustrated as I read comments about teachers and schools who are not helping your children. Unfortunately, there are many people in education who are not trained to teach children with disabilities. There are also many well meaning teachers who try to do a good job, but are ignorant of new techniques and programs. So, educate them and hold them accountable. On the LD in Depth page there are many current articles about techniques and programs that work. Read them, print them out, take them to school and ask, “Which of these do you use? How much training does the teacher have? Does the teacher have the materials and the support to use the program?”
“If you cannot provide effective programs then who in the school or district can? If you do not provide then I’ll let the state tell us what you must provide?” It may mean finding an advocate, but it may make things change.

Do, however, keep in mind the serenity prayer… there are things over which a person has no control.

Also, while that process of educating them and holding them accountable is happening, often the studnet is the one paying the personal cost.
