My youngest son had his 1st day of summer school today and what amazed me is how small his class was. Don’t get me wrong I am very pleased because I know he needs the services but I want to know where are the other students? There is a total of 5 kids in this class, it is a cross categoral LD class. I can not believe that only 5 students qualify in the district. There are 4 elementry schools in this district and each of them has 4 3rd grade classes with about 28 students. The class is held 5 days a week for 3 1/3 hours with the main focus being language arts (readng/writing). How can only 5 out of over 400 students qualify? I thought maybe it was due to the types of LD kids in the class 2 on the autism spectrum but according to our district guidelines you could have up to 10 in this type of class. Since these kids are not getting additional services such as speech or social work services this can not be the reason either. Just curious to most districts qualify so few? Feeling very lucky today.
Re: small class
When was in his first ld class there were 4 students. As the year went on more students came into the class and it was full by April.
Re: small class
lot’s of parents are told they can’t have summer school. They go away and never question the school system. Aren’t you glad you aren’t one of them?
Re: small class
Here in Florida, where I’m at a child has to be failing to qualify for summer schoo.
Re: small class
Funny thing is though I did not ask, I planned on it but they asked 1st. Maybe they know me so well they thought they would beat me to the punch.
Re: small class
Hmm,
I would ask to see that in writing.
Being from Florida,I could almost betcha this isn’t a written policy, and if it is,it is not state law.
If your child is an ESE student it is an IEP team decision on whether or not to participate in ESY,and guess who is an equal member of the team? YOU!
Well, there are parents who will not hear of their child
being labeled learning disabled.
And those sent to private school
and homeschooled. Some children are ‘included’ in the
regular classroom with aides.
My son isn’t in sped this year because the teacher
had no control over the classroom.
He will be next year.
