Many of you know that in an effort to help our gift/ld son we took some drastic measures. Having helped him maintain through middle school we knew we had exhausted ourselves and our public school district and high school loomed menacingly in his future. So, I quit my teaching job, sold our house and moved a hundred miles away for him to attend a private, college-prep high school for ld children. We rented an apartment a few blocks from school so he could walk to and from. I got a new teaching job. My husband still comutes a few days a week. For us, all of this was hard and lonely, but we were determined. Now, the sigh!!! We made it through the first year. He was on the honor roll all year. Tuesday night he received two awards at the school awards assembly. He worked hard and learned interesting things. Although he tells us it was hard, we saw a calm and ease in him that we rarely saw before. For his recent 15th birthday, I bought him a Star Wars book that was about 150 pages and maybe 4th or 5th grade reading level. He announced that he was going to read it HIMSELF and nightly he read a few pages on his own until he was done. The first real book he has ever read alone! I’m resisting the temptation to have the book bronzed. One down and three to go, but the future looks bright for the first time in ages. We are fortunate to be able to make this move. I wanted to share the good news with all of you who have been supportive and all of you who walk this same path, trying to care for a dear child.
Re: Huge sigh of relief!
How wonderful for you and your son. Very inspirational news and I ADMIRE the drastic steps your family took for the sake of a promising future for your son. Much continued success!
Re: Huge sigh of relief!
Bronze that BOOK!
Really is an awsome thought.. Being a late reader,I didn’t learn to read until I was 12 or 13,books became valuable to me,something you keep. I know my feeling about any kind of written word,is because of how long and hard the road to reading was. Bronze that book for your boy Angela, believe me,it is as valuable to him as it is for you.
God Bless you and your family,I am so happy all is well:-)
Re: Huge sigh of relief!
Angela,
What wonderful parents you are and your son sounds awesome. Congratulations to you all.
I am with Socks bronze the book.
Re: Huge sigh of relief!
I agree with the bronzing idea. If my son ever reads an entire book, I’m sure I would.
Congrats!
Angela!
A happy ending :-)
So glad you found a solution
and were able to pursue it.
Those stories are good to hear.
