IEP and moving-helpppppp

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My sons 3 yr testing is due-I received notification maybe midMay. We were moving to a new state June 4th and I simply didnt deal with it-there was sooo mcuh else going on

Now, Im worrying I did something wrong.

And what should I do now? Its school choice where we are now and I dont even know which school hes assigned to-they are SUPPOSED to announce it the first 2 weeks of July but I gather they are never on time.

Should I talk to the new special ed dept here? Is the old district under any obligation at this point? Being currently unemployed, I could take a day to have him tested over there(less than 3 hrs away)

Its sounds stupid but I think I just blocked all of this from my memory till the last test score posting and then went “Oh, shi….”

‘snot the end of the world :)

Contact the sped department where you’re leaving, assuming you don’t have some reason to prefer the new district. Just tell ‘em your kiddo needs that triennial testing done to take to the new district and can you schedule a time. That would probably be easiest for you so it’s worth asking.

Or you should call the new district and tell them that your kiddo’s going there, and needs a triennial & that it’s due. You don’t really have to stand around and justify why it wasn’t done before you leave… it’s just due. (It’s not like your driver’s license where you’d have to start all over ‘cause the date went past :-)) And/or you can ask to meet with them to figure out what they’re gonna do w/ the kiddo when school starts - you want to get a jump on that anyway.

As Oh, Sh….’s go this one’s manageable.

I’d agree with Sue’s recommendation to take a copy of his folder to the new district and have the re-eval done there. They will have incentive to do it quicky as your child will be on their headcount this year and we all know that paperwork MUST be correct! ;-) In a school choice situation, his disabilites may influence which school is best, so I’d go have them do the testing right away.
