I am new to this forum, I am currently in the process of uncovering my 5 yearolds multiple problems. We are sure he has adhd, some form of ld we are checking for fragile x syndrome, he has another syndrome related to his cleft palate, his psychologist feels he probably has an impulsivity disorder and this appeares to be just the beginning. The other problem that complicates all of this is the fact that my husband has Adult ADD as well as Adult LD, and he has trouble understanding and processing the information we are getting. I feel as thought I am a single Parent. I work full-time as a supervisor managing 52 people coordinate all doctor evaluations, therapy appointments and such. Does anyone out there no of any resources both financial as well as anything else to help me to find my way through this maze???
Re: living with a child with adhd/ld/?
Have you looked into getting an advocate? The parents and educators on this board can be incredibly helpful, you will be amazed at how many parents have children with similar issues.
It helps to have people who understand what you are going through and that can help you get the help your child needs.
I can understand having a parent with LD. My husband was diagnosed at age 6 but never received any help,he finally dropped out of school at age 15. When I try and tell him about all the things I read about, first, Iget the blank glazed over look and then it reminds him of his horrible experiences as a kid. It isn’t that he doesn’t care, its just hard for him to understand.
At any rate, try posting here if you have some extra time, at the very least itmight releive some of your stresses!!

My husband gets that glazed look also, and he’s not LD. I think as the primary care giver, all of this stuff just hits alot closer to home for me. Its my work - not his. He cares, but its my mission.

A neighbor of mine told me she got really good help through Easter Seals and that they charge according to income. She also told me that she referred a friend of hers who had lots of money to them and she said it was the most thorough evaluation she had ever had.
I too think the husbands get the glazed look LD or not.

This is a great place to start and you are in wonderful company! My recommendation is that beyond looking for information here (which you’ll find LOTS!), look into local resources as well. Search for local support groups, information through your local school district, etc…
One unexpected source of information for me was to find a local PACE provider and she shared a wealth of information with me about various resources and things she had tried with her own son. She was honest and very knowedgeable. (to find PACE do a Google search with “PACE cognitive”).
Good luck to you! It may take some time to compile your resources, but the more you research, and the more people you talk with, the more you’ll discover.
BTW, my husband is “brillant” and can’t understand or process any of this either. You are not alone!
