my son age 9 has just been dx with Bipolar and the docs say I should have the school do a behavior plan for him.My son so far is no trouble at school but I can see it coming and a high possiblity..They say to do a comphrehansive plan .he does have anxiety problems as well and I see them casuing more trouble than misbehavior as well as his sleepingness whcich did cause some troble this past year.He even fell a sleep in school and could barly function according to his teacher. This summer he has been up and down so much I know.He also has learning disabilities and is gifted I am now requesting more IQ tests by the school it seems they just did a screening but he did qualify as SLD.I am scared they are going to see that he is Bipolar and say his LD is related to his Bipolar and say it is emotionla and throw him away as a bad kid.
Re: son dx and will it change things
Okay what would be some good things to ask for .I already sent a letter via certified mail asking for a comphrehesive behavior plan ,WISC,and assitive tech eval.I mailed the letter yesterday with the paper from his independent eval he had staing he is Bipolar and with theses suggestions on it.However I really dont know what goes into a behavior plan.I do want things like when he is anxious let me walk him to class without a fuss.Last year when I did all the teachers would make comments about but his own.Even when I tied his shoes for him they said i would make him tie them himself well he cant he has coordination problmes he does tie now but he would be tying them all day not tight enough. These comments hurt. Also when he comes home and sleeps al eveniing and I cant get him up with and energy to do homework.would stuff like that go into one.
Re: son dx and will it change things
I higly recommend taking him to an Occupational Therapist to talk about Sensory Integration. Often kids with your son’s problems including bi=polar have SI issues causing many things.
Re: son dx and will it change things
he does get Ot in school for sensory issues as well as fine motor and balance
Perhaps the time to talk to them is now… while he’s not having the big behavior problems. It’s so hard to know how any one teacher is going to react, though… the teacher who will walk into the faculty room and throw up her hands and say “Argh! They expect me to teach a lunatic!” is one you’d rather *not* have that little piece of information… but there are three other teachers who will not make the mistake of assuming that what worked perfectly before to get a kiddo on track would be a disaster today because today the kiddo just doesn’t have the energy. If you could have a plan in place and get some success underfoot, it coudl go a *long* way towards helping when things are having their ups & downs.
