Read, Write and Type

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Just wanted to share with all of you that I purchased this program for my son this summer to learn to type and it has been a wonderful success. It has great graphics and has retained my son’s interest. He has been through all the letters and now is repeating it (his idea, if you can believe that). He has volunterly sat doing this for up to 45 minutes at a time. I do send him up but really never expected more than 15 minutes from him.

Now my five year old is doing it. He doesn’t hold his hands correctly (hands too small) but is learning sound/symbol relationship from it. He likes that the computer will repeat things for him. Seems to prefer the computer to old mom. And get this—he and his brother are fighting over who gets to use the computer to do the typing program.

WOW Beth.
Who makes it, where did you get it, and how much did you wind up paying?

( did you finally get an email?)

We have used an old version of Read, Write and Type for quite a while, it was put out by the Learning Co.(now defunct), but is around in bargain bins at Marshall’s for under $10. Our version just teaches typing using phonics. It’s really for younger kids because the teaching is done by these little colored creatures and hands and is cartoon-like but cute; my 11yo now uses Type to Learn(Sunburst), that they use in school.

I think that I have that one too, I purchased it off ebay. It is two hands, lefty and righty, or something like that. They are telling a story and something eats all the letters.

My son really likes it becuase it seems like a cartoon, the only problem is that I have to adjust my computer screen and it is hard to get back when he is done!!

It was put together by, oh, I forget what kind of letters they have after their names but they’re educator types, not software marketing types :-)

You can get the latest version from them more directly at http://www.readwritetype.com — or if you do a google search for it you’ll find those bargain basement older versions (but not sure the authors get anything for those sales) online.

Several years back I took a general survey of parents about “what educational software” they liked, whatever kind — and this is the one that came up the most.

I have to admit, when I first got it, I used it to see if I thought my son would sit through and realized I was sitting there mesmerized!!

I guess that is a good indicator of how well my son liked it, when your mom wants to use it too!

Socks,

I posted where I got it in a separate message. It is designed for younger children, although I have to admit it is mesamorizing You have to capture the letters from a virus. It does dance like routines when you are successful.

I got your message, thank you, and tried to reply without luck. Maybe it is me but I can’t seem to email you!!! Besides thanking you, I was interested in particular names at U of Miami. That, of course, is closer to us and would be my preference, if I can get a good reference.
