My son was having real trouble in Interactive Metronome today. It was so hard to watch. He was just all over the place.
Then the IM trainer did something interesting. She already had known certain information about his interest in football because she spent a fair amount of time in the beginning getting to know him. Today, she asked him his favorite and least favorite football team. Then she said that every time he got it on the beat the Giants would score. Every time he missed four in a row the Jets would score. He did much better with this intervention.
She also spent some time talking to him about the IM after the session. At first he said it was fine. Then after awhile he shared that the the extra sounds were too loud and distracting. If she didn’t persist he wouldn’t have shared this. He is not one to complain and I think she sensed that. She said next time we would work on getting the sounds to the correct noise level for him.
I was very impressed.
Re: The whole child and IM.
Wish I could say that our provider connected with my son that well. She’s trying really hard, but he’s hard to manage. Hey, if he could focus better and do silly hand and foot motions easily he wouldn’t need IM now would he?
We are about 5 sessions into the program (after 6 sessions to get him synchronized) and I’m still hoping… Its so hard to separate out the different things going on though. He was really well regulated on our recent vacation, but back to being kinda obsessive this week. Well, its back to school time. So who knows what’s what.
Linda, keep us posted and I’ll do the same.
Re: The whole child and IM.
Lu Lu,
Every once and awhile I find someone who can really help my son. When I find someone like that it catches me by surprise, “sigh.” Some people have a gift for understanding children.
Karen,

I keep telling this myself too. I think, “Wow, if he can get to the point where he can focus on something this boring and difficult, focusing on math will just be a breeze.
Yes, it will be interesting to see how these two puzzle kids do.
Here's the latest...
We are 6 sessions into the IM program (after 6 pre-sessions) and today he had a breakthrough in the sense that his scores came way down. (She’s not giving us total scores so I don’t know the number) and he had many instances of “bursts” (being on the beat in a row for at least 4 beats)
So - I’m waiting. I’m thrilled he’s making progress and he feels some satisfaction but I am wondering when we’ll see some improvement in his real life functioning. Does anyone know when you start to see the benefits??
Re: Here's the latest...
Karen N,
My son also had a good day. He was able to focus after she adjusted the sounds. We still have one more presession.
That will make it 6 presessions, just like your boy.
It will be so hard to tell when they are working with my little mister inconsistant.
At times he can be right on with something, then he will just fall apart with the same exact thing the next time.
Congrats on the progress. It gives me hope.
Linda
Re: Here's the latest...
The effects of IM are so hard to pin point. Again,my kids have done so many programs, except Pace and Vand V. The biggest change I noticed is interest in physical activities and homework. Not sure if it the desire for engaging in the physical activities or less frustration doing homewrok, but this is our second week into school and they go right to the homework without complaint, and there attention is sustained. THIS is the biggest thing. They can sustain their attention to things. My youngest is into skating and my oldest is into skateboarding, they practice and practice. They have had homework every night. They don’t get rattled and upset, they keep at it. Know what I’m saying?
It’s almost more an emotional effect then an academic one.
Re: Here's the latest...
I hear you. But with these kids (heck, with everyone really..) emotions are affected by their ability to do whatever they want to do!
We’ve found our son to be generally more relaxed and focused this summer. School doesn’t start until sept. 9, and then we have the anniversary of 9/11 , and the onset of all the other activities too. So I expect his anxiety to increase that week. He should be finished with IM by then if he keeps up the pace he is going at. Just hoping IM will help him focus and integrate all the other stuff we are doing with him. We are mostly looking for a positive impact in his reading skills because he has the pieces but has great difficulty in putting it together. But if we get some improvement with utensils, awareness of his surroundings etc like I’ve heard reported here I’ll still be thrilled!
Another fine example of someone who really knows kids!!! I love these stories. It gives me hope that there are many more of these truly gifted people out there. Although I have met very few myself.
Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the IM!!!
