Recommendations for CD/ severe L.D.?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Our population of C.D. or severe L.D. children has increased and some of the materials that work for most L.D. children, don’t appear to work for them. Anyone have any suggestions: reading comprehension, math, written language. These are children in grades 2- 5. Many are reading 2 years or more below grade level and appear to be stuck. I haven’t had children like this for years. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I would recommend Phono-Graphix for reading. You can just get the book, “Reading Reflex”, and make your own manipulatives (or order manipulatives for $15 from their website, http://www.readamerica.net). If you are working with a class or small group, then white boards and colored markers work well.

For math facts, it’s hard to beat Math Facts the Fun Way for severe LD. Website is http://www.citycreek.com

For comprehension, the games in “How To Increase Your Child’s Verbal Intelligence” by McGuiness (authors of Reading Reflex) might be helpful. These can be done verbally, which is helpful for children with written language difficulties.
