Help Needed!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My daughter is in the sixth grade and we have moved up here from the mid west. She is AdHD, and has been tested twice once in second grade and then again in sixth grade. In this time, her WISC lll scores (PIQ, VIQ, and Full Scale) have fallen from the 90’s to the 70’s. I think the previous school system oversited many problems that my daughter has, but they never pinpointed anything else wrong, but the ADHD. Is this normal and could this fall in scores be from ADHD? Her vocab is not increasing, she doesn’t seem to comprehend what she reads, math difficulties, and I believe an expressive language issue that they never folowed up on with a SLP. She is dysgraphic too. Could any one tell me if this is normal from ADHD? thank you

What other testing did she have besides the IQ? Who diagnosed her with ADHD?

She had behavoiral, emotional, and social. They said that she did not qualify for emotionally disturbed. The school psycholgist in Arkansas diagnosed her. I believe she ADHD because of her distractibliy and other things. But there is also something else that is not being picked up. Her VIQ fell almost 20 points in three years. Essentailly, they gave her minimal help which just didn’t help her to improve.

almost like having a clean slate

the 6th grade testing was done in your new state? Correct? What are they saying?

Sadly, the lower decreased scores should help her get services that maybe she was borderline on before. Is the ADHD being treated?

I would assume that ADHD could easily affect all areas mentionned but agree there sounds like more to this. There are disorders that are characterized by falling skill levels-more a medical issue though.

Id get as much further testing done as you can manage-and personally Id bring in a medical dr as well to rule out thyroid issues, etc

What were the actual tests and test scores? There are many qualified and educated parents and educators on this board who could possibly lead you in the right direction!

My son’s “hearing” is perfect, too - however his listening isn’t. He has something called an auditory processing disorder. The sound comes in fine, volumewise, but gets scrambled in his brain before it gets where it is supposed to go. I had him tested by a licensed audiologist, and our health insurance paid for it.

I’m sorry, but anytime a child’s test scores fall that dramatically, something is very very wrong. You need to get another full evaluation by the school. Obviously she was taught nothing over the last few years for an IQ to drop like that.

YOu need to get some really good testing done and get some really good tutoring in place, pronto. The new school should begin remediation immediately.

Right now, since we are in a new state, I am having all the testing redone. I have asked for psychoeducational eval to include IQ, emotional, behavoiral, and socail as well as speech and language, reading, and math evaluations. She does get OT for a visual perception problem (spacial relations) and PT because she has difficulty with her gait as she born with club feet. I am hoping this new eval pinpoints something other the known ADHD. It is very frustrating. Like in Arkansas, her testing pointed to some expressive language deficits, but they never would further test for that. They never tested at all for receptive language. She is also dysgraphic, but they would never give her a computer to do her work on to make her life just a little easier. This is all just so frustrating…so new state, new eval…hopefully new news so I can help her.

The real problem will be if the new school relies on the new IQ score. Then she might not have the discrepancy between IQ and achievement needed for LD placement. This might require an outside evauation by someone familiar with the Matthew effect.

Did you ask for an assistive technology and a new OT evaluation?
