Section 504 and Dyslexia

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can a dyslexia student get a Section 504 instead of classification? i know that there is more protection with IDEA than Section 504. But, my child is basically receiving accomodations and modification while being classified. He may no longer meet the criteria to keep him classified. So, can he recieve a Section 504 only?
thanks.

I stumbled over this the other day,you might be interested. It is a presentation that was given describing the intersection between dyslexia ,IDEA and 504.

I am a teacher and also a parent of a child who has dysgraphia. I have him under 504 because this assures your child will recieve modifications. The teachers must meet the recommeded modifications that you, the teacher and facilitator make. I have found this to work for us right now. My son can not be labeled LD because he doesn’t have enough areas of weakness. So 504 helps to ensure that his teacher knows that he has something wrong and that he is not just lazy or doesn’t care. All public schools should have this. Private schools may not.

My daughter is a 504 student.

She has two chronic illnesses that
can take her out of school from a week
to two months.
She is not learning disabled but she has
physical limitations at times.

This is how I was able to keep her in
regular school and not be transferred to
the alternative school which was NOT
an option for her.

In the town right next to us she would
have had visits from a tutor - our district
sucks in this regard.
