My son is dyslexic and has a significant auditory processing delay. He has always had difficulty copying from the board and finds writing extremely difficult and someone had suggested I might want to have a neuro opthamologist look at him. He is taking keyboarding and he is in fifth grade. Has anyone had any experience with one. I would appreciate any advise. Thank You :)
Re: neuro opthamologist
Please email me the article on handwriting — always looking for new ideas. Thanks. Victoria
I took my son to a developmental optomotrist. Some are better than others. My opinion of them is rather luke warm. I am glad I had him evaluated so that I know about the specific issues we are up against. She diagnosed him with tracking issues. She gave him glasses and recommended vision therapy. The glasses didn’t make that much of a difference for him but one of my best friend’s son was diagnosed with focusing issues from the same docter and the glasses totally changed his abilities at school. Some believe kids with tracking issues must have vision therapy others believe the best therapy for that particular issue is reading. We are just sticking with the reading for now since he reads well.
There is also also visual processing issues which are more complex. This is different from “eye muscle” related issues like tracking. My son has these too. He couldn’t read graphs, tell time, space words well on the page. Interactive metronome coupled with some visual perception exercises I did with him have helped a great deal but have not completely erradicated these issues.
I will email you an article I have on handwriting if you email me your address. It explains all of the possible areas that could be breaking down. Handwriting is a complex activity and any one of a number of deficits could be affecting it. Maybe you will see from it what areas you think are causing the problem.
The copying from the board issue seems vision related. My son doesn’t have a specific problem with this.
