The ones who are against the special ed is the folks who have ben victimized by it. People like me who believe that the education system should pick up the cost of a private school placement when the system has failed to teach the kids properly in writing, math or reading.

This sounds like a school assignment. I suggest that you click on LD in Depth on the top and the go to the Legal & Legislative section and read some of the articles there.

The Federal Government enacted IDEA to provid special education services to children with special needs. The FEDS stated they would fund Special Education up to 40% (note they never said they would fund 40%). The FEDS have never funded anywhere near 40%. States feel that they are asked/told to fund more then they should of special education. State funds spent on Special Education the states claim take money away from general education. Enforcement of IDEA by FEDS is not what it needs to be. Enforcement of Special Education of School Districts by State Dept.of Education is not what it should be. Parents want their children to obtain an appropriate education. The problems surrounding Special Education center around money.

Helen;

You are right ! This reminds me of Medicare/Medicaid. I do not mean to get political…. Please forgive me ? The Feds created Medicare in 1965 with the promise they would fund the program and it would provide health security for seniors…. In 2002, where is the security ? You go to doctors in metropolitan areas like New York City or Washington D.C. suburbs, many will not take it because the government never fully reimburses. So why should we believe any promises on IDEA ?

I’m in favor of reasonable accommodation no matter what it’s called.

I’m in favor of reasonable accomodations too, but getting it to happen is another story. I’m sure just like Medicare, it was a good idea,but making it work is another issue.
