Orton-Gillingham tutoring?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I found out last night that the Mason’s provide scholarships for Orton-Gillingham. Has anyone had any experience with this?

The best I can tell you is my son has been being tutored in both the wilson and orton-gillingham methods. His tutor has used a combination and he has had wonderful success in the last year. Good luck!

Dear Dad:

I am not aware that the Masons provide scholarships for Orton-Gillingham tutoring by private tutors. But I do know that their Scottish Rite division provides Orton-Gillingham tutoring at their facilities in many cities, and scholarships to these facilities are available.

If you have questions about what Orton-Gillingham instruction is, you may contact me. I have been trained in O-G procedures, and can explain it to you.

More & More Scottish Rite places are doing O-G- I think Alphabetic Phonics was developed by/for them.

Hi Dad, As a matter of fact, I do. I applied to the Scottish Rite, the Mason Learning Centers for Children in July and was pleasantly surprised when they called and said they would take her right away. (there is usually a long waiting list around here, about a year or so). She starts next week. The program is free. Teachers are trained (a two year course) in pure Orton-Gillingham methods. They then provide one on one O-G instruction to the child, under direct supervision. I hear the program in excellent, and look forward to it for my daughter. The Masons have several sites. What state are you, I will try to get you a phone number to call.

The Scottish Rite folks do an excellent job. All their hospitals and Learning Centers are free. Unfortunately, here in Fort Wayne there was a 50 kid waiting list before they even opened, and they can only handle ten kids a year.

Hi. I’m looking for a place or tutor to have my LD daughter learn the Orton-Gillingham Method . I’m in New Jersey. Do you know of any facilities or tutors I can contact? Thank you.
