Hi all,
it is around 9 pm here an i have just been floored by what my daughter checked out of the school libruary. she was in her room reading (first time for everything Ha Ha) when i looked at her book she jerked it away… here is why… Name: TEEN WITCH wicca for a new generation
a complete guide of witchcraft, spells, enchantment…yada yada yada…
now not to say this religion is not approperate for some, i just believe it should not be accessable withinthe public school system. had my daughter came to me with her inquire i would have helped her research it (maybe) now not only do i have to worry about how she is reading now i have to worry about WHAT she is reading..
just thaught you guys would like to see this … and they wander why our children have gotten so OUT OF CONTROL
Hope
Re: approperate reading material
Stephini is 12, i’m really not teed about what she is reading as much as to where she acquired this material. i am a book worm, i read everything … i almost thrive on knowledge… so i can say i have read about wicca, the problem i am having has come to this … if my child believes in Paganism that is her choice… i am an open minded person and she knows she can talk with me about this, however the problem has come in where the school division has this material available to the children… courious or not… the school is not the place… public libruary, book store.etc… that is where she can get the knowledge… with parental supervision….
Re: approperate reading material
Our Constitution and Bill of Rights assure us religious freedom and freedom of press. You appear to be advocating censorship, a wholly unamerican activity, because you don’t agree with this particular religion.
WICCA represents the old religion as was practiced in the British Isles for centuries before the Christians arrived and sometimes forced everyone to climb aboard.
I would hate to see our school libraried purged of nonchristian literature. Our children need to know that there are many paths out that people take in their own spiritual unfoldment.
Perhaps the best thing for you to do is to read some of this book and have a more or less objective discussion with your child. I personally subscribe to the idea of educating our children. I find the best way to create mystique and appeal is to shroud something in mystery by hiding it from our children. This creates a natural curiosity on the part of most people to find out what the big deal is, so to speak. When we are open about our beliefs vs. other beliefs, then our children can grow in understanding. Read the book, but don’t fear it. Most Wiccans are not scary people, they are NOT devil worshippers.
Re: approperate reading material
And why not in the school library? age 12 is an age that is appropriate to begin to look at and to ask questions about beliefs and spirituality. Further, not all children in our schools are Christian, there are Wiccans everywhere (right in my own community) and they send their children to public schools, too. Why should our school libraries house literature on Judiasim and Christianity, while overlooking a teaching that is far older?
Re: approperate reading material
freedom of religion yes… i am a pagan so i do not bash the wicca, however what i am saying is this… i do not believe giving an imature child with little to no knowledge of the power invoked the power to draw upon and set forth. should my child inquire she has the right! but with supervision… not to have the access to spells, chants and envocations processes without approperate training within… to understand when the anger comes is not the time to enovke any form.i have a strong Irish celtic background… but my parents allowed me the knowledge of vertues before rites, i was 18 before i read my first lititure, it is a matter of maturity, not religious beliefs.

how old is she? makes a big difference and this is a good excuse to discuss your values with her, not to attack her choices. she may just be curious—esp with all the shows on tv with this as a subject.
