Linda F on Pace

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been out of town but saw your message buried to me several pages back.

We are talking about the same PACE. It doesn’t involve worksheets—you must have inferred that from my comments about kill and drill. The kill and drill part is the auditory processing work which is the foundation for their reading program Master the Code. It is drill to a metronome. It was kill and drill for my son because it was so difficult for him.

There is a trampoline part of PACE. PACE has some senosory motor elements to it but it is primarily a cognitive development program.

PACE made clear the depth of my son’s problems. He didn’t not test that badly—it was just that he could not learn to do certain things. We hit road blocks very early, which for the most part, never came down.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have waited longer. He was 8. I would have done IM and more Neuronet. I would have done sound therapy first rather than after PACE. If your son has any auditory processing issues, I would do THE Listening Program before PACE. AFter we hit road blocks with Neuronet as well, we did The Listening Program. He suddenly could do the AP exercises we struggled with PACE. By that time, we were too burnt out to keep going.

I know several PACE providers who have their kids go through TLP before doing PACE because it makes it easier for them.

I think it is a good program but if your child’s sensory issues are not resolved, then you are wasting your time and money. Now I knew this but both I and the therapist misread my son.

My son’s problems are not really auditory but visual and motor. He does seem to grasp concepts well that are presented verbally but he stalls when he has to transfer these concepts to paper because of the visual motor deficit. He has improved alot in this but it is still difficult, especially as the work gets harder.

I was wondering if perhaps he could use his auditory strengths to gain enough automaticity with this program that it would make the visual area easier.

I may just start with lindamood bell and audiblox and think about PACE for next summer.

Thanks for the input. You have helped me to prioritize.
