I have an 8yo son in third grade. He hesitates before answering and appears to just not understand what you are asking him. He is an A,B,C student but he struggles and things are hard for him. He had a complete neurpsyched. eval last year before 2nd gr. Dx: learning difficulties NOS and inattentiveness. His present teacher says his focus issues are mild and she feels it is more processing issues. He has had ST,OT & other evals and things are always vague. Basically I have a child who struggles and we can’t pinpoint why. What testing should the school do and why? I want to go into the meeting prepared and knowledgable. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Re: What testing is needed?
This website:

offers a list of qualified audiologist, who can test for CAPD. You probably need to find one and call your pediatrician or family Dr. for a referral.

Re: What testing is needed?
Yes he has had speech evals. He has rec’d ST since age 3 1/2. There has not been a dx of capd. I didn’t know that most schools can’t test for capd. So if they are looking for a processing problem what will they do if they don’t have access to an audiologist?
Kathy, Has he had a speech language evaluation? This is not usually done as part of neuropsych testing (though I would think the tester should have recommended it in view of the problems you are describing). The school district should have the resources to do this testing. I would also consider testing for central auditory processing disorder. It is very unlikely the school district can do this. It usually needs to be done at a university with an audiology department because it requires special equipment. I’d try to get this done on my own—the testing is pretty inexpensive as these things go and is usually covered by insurance. CAPD kids often get misdxed as ADD, although the two conditions can also be co-morbid and often are.
