Ready to burst (good)

I just received my freshman sons official fist semester grades, he had took a guess at what he thought they would be and he did better then he thought. His guidance counslor called to let me know how proud she and the school are of his efforts. He received the following grades:

Social issues(class discussing current social issues such as the death penalty, abortion, crime, ect): B-
Integrated science (introductory lab science): B-
Band: A
Algebra 1A (part 1 of a 2 year algebra class): B
Freshman health: B (taken over summer)
Freshman boys PE: A (taken over summer)
Appreciation of Lit (introductory class to Lit): C-

My son thought he got a D in the Lit course which would of prevented him from taking some courses in the English department. This semester he has a reading skills class to work on word attack skills and fluency. Since his comprehension is on grade level they see no need to restrict his schedule. They have agreed to work on his reading skills “off-line.” They have a reading specialist who will work with him next year after school if he continues to need reading instruction. They felt that since his comprehension is good and he is able to perform with minimal accomodations they will have him take no official special ed clases next year. They are very hopeful that he will be one of the students who graduates out of special ed before the end of high school. I can’t wait to get home and tell him how well he did. He thought he failed or barely passed all his finals. He got a B- and two of them! He even passed the Lit final and that is how he got a C- instead of a D. He is just gonna flip!
