What grade is your son in now? When is his next IEP and testing? How much time does he have in resource now? This infomation will help us give you some suggestions.

Hi Marge,
Even if your son is tested for ADHD, no one can medicate him without your permission.

To insure that your son gets the help he needs (and is entitled to!), you might want to consider talking with an advocate or educational psychologist who can provide testing and advocate services. This is someone who will go over the files, help determine what your son will need, and help insure your son gets these services on his IEP. They attend the IEP meeting and support you.

I had an advocate at my son’s IEP meeting (I also used her for outside testing — which was very helpful!). She’s an educational psychologist and is listed in the yellow pages under educational testing although another parent recommended her to me.

If possible ask other parents or find some qualified people from the phonebook, interview them and then choose one you like who seems knowledgable.

Don’t be afraid to fight for your child. Good luck!
