I’m looking for a summer camp program for my son who is LD, ADD-inattentive, CAPD, and has just recently been diagnosed as Asperger’s. He has just turned 11 and is in a school for kids with LD and is doing well. I live in the Washington DC area and would like to find a camp that is supportive and tolerant of kids with differences, but doesn’t necessarily have to be a camp that is exclusively for LD/ADD/Asperger’s kids. My son tends to be very shy and quiet. I’m hoping to find a one week or two week long sleepaway program within a 3-4 hour drive from DC. Any recommendations? Thanks!
Re: Summer camp programs
There is a camp in Hendersonville, NC, called Camp Timberwolf. It was started by a child psychologist to give his kids a place to go for the summer. There is a website. Check it out.
Thx! Anyone have a child attend one of these camps?
Both of these camps look like good options. Has anyone on this board sent their children to either of these camps? Thanks.
Re: Summer camp programs
It is near Scranton, PA in Honesville. Check out their website, summitcamp.com.
An excellent program that my son attended
The camp is SOAR. They are located in the smokey mountains of North Carolina. www.soar-nc.org (I think.)
Many different kinds of courses (horsepacking, llama trekking, etc. etc.) and the ratio of adults to kids is very, very low (like 4:1 low). It’s not cheap, but they work on their LD’s, too. Self-acceptance. Most of the counselors are successful young adults w/LD and many of the Sr. Staff (Executive Director, for example) are LD, too.
I highly recommend these people and their program.
Have you checked out the Summit Camp in PA? Several friends have sent their sons there, with excellent results.

For day camp,I’ve been sending my son to Sandy Spring Summer Friends Camp. He is GT/LD. Go to http://www.ssfs.org for information on various programs that are offered during the summer, including science camps.
