Co Writer Software

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Id like to investigate Co Writer Software after my son learns some basic
keyboarding . Went to website and the cost is about $300. for one copy.

FOr those of you who have used it at home is it worth that much? I read
about it at the Manufacturers website and here on this board and was quite impressed with what I read. Sounds perfect for my son but I was a bit put off by the price.

For those who have used it is it worth it? Did your children with severe
writing delays have the patience to work with it ?

Thanks for any comments .

My school district has copies and they allowed my daughter to use it at school and at home (2nd grade). It is a great beginning program, but a little slow. It did give great confidence, but she soon began to type too fast for it. I would see if I could get the school to do an Assistive Technology evaluation on your child and get them to give you a copy to use. (Many, many districts have them, they just don’t broadcast it). $300.00 is alot and I think I would spend that on a later date for more “advanced software”.

I would be very reluctant to invest in this type of software without trying it first with your daughter. What are the issues? What have you already tried? Work with the assistive technology team at your child’s school to help identify what the obstacles to academic success are for your child. The team may have some recommendations and they will be able to try out different and appropriate tech ideas at school if they are indicated. Co:Writer can be a very effective program for some students but it is definitely not indicated for all students with learning issues.
