My daughter is 8 yo in second grade and is now hooray starting to read on a second grade level - we are closing the gap. In kindergaten we tried Fast Foward, vison therapy, and Linda Mood Bell, In first grade we did sensory integration therapy, fast forward and phono graphix. This year we are still doing phono graphix, and a tutor for writen language. In addition to this, I read to her every day since she was born, even before she was born. She has read to me or completed reading work -even if I could only get 5 minutes from her everyday since kindergarten. I don’t know about all these approches, but one thing I know is hard work, determination, perseverence and a positive outlook pays off. WE WILL CONTINUE TO TOW THE LINE, WHATEVER IT TAKES.
Re: We've tried it all
Thank you. I always tell my husband when he gets discouraged “At least she will know what it is like to really work hard for something”. A rare quality these days. Linda F wrote:

Re: We've tried it all
Congratulations and keep up the good work! :-)
We’re in the same boat. Progress has been slow and has required tremendous (and unrelenting!) work, but it IS progress!!!
I agree with you wholeheartedly about the value of knowing what its like to work very hard for something.
Re: We've tried it all
That is great for you and your daughter. But do realise not everyone has the financial resources to do any extra programs to help their children. This is my case , if I did have any extra money to help my child I would. We use every cent we have just to live. I do believe Money is the difference in those children who move forward and those who do not It is really sad that we can not count on the schools to help our children. I have called meetings and called Special Ed directors, and nothing changes. I can not afford a lawyer so making the school do what they should is out of the question.I am at the piont that I pray for the lottery. I know this is the only way I can help can afford to do what needs to be done. I know that the NCLB act will not help. Our distric has no money , our govenor has made cuts to the school in his budget. And most of the NCLB act funding in going to povity school,s. Our school is not povity, it just has enough money to pay for what it has to. And that dose not include paper, and supplys for extra activities such as art supplys and cooking supplys for baking class. We have some students who don’t have text books because the budjet had to be cut. My child has 3 years left of school and I worry about her future. I can not afford to pay for the helth care that she needs due to a CHD.
Re: We've tried it all
If you do not have the money for your child’s health care please be aware that most states do have programs that cover health care for children. You don’t have to even be poor to qualify, it isn’t medicaid.
I agree that it is completely unfair. Moms who work don’t always have the time to help and if the money is tight you can’t pay for extra help.
Re: We've tried it all
I have compassion and empathy for you and your children. Many school districts, even those with money, do not know how to help children who are having a difficult time. Some of the programs mentioned you can learn to teach yourself in a short amount of time. They are very inexpensive. Perhaps your delivery may not be as perfect as a professionals, but your tutoring could go a really long way in helping. The Reading Reflex book is around 15$. If you post on the Veg. Source homeschoolers board there are lots people trading materials .
That is the bottom line. Hard work and lots of it. Hoooray for you and your daughter.
What a relief major breakthroughs like that are?
