exit exams

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

For all of you who have been worried about those exit exams I have news for you. The key is in the alternate assessments. I have a 16 year old 10th grade student who now does not have to pass those dreadful tests in order to graduate. I do however need some assistance. I am looking for a non allowable accom we could use for US History. It seems that most of the things we could use in this area is an allowable accom. in our state. Thanks everyone, looking foward to your reply.

In our state, if they take an alternate assessment with different content than the standard test, they will NOT get a regular diploma as it now stands. They can take a computerized adaptive test which will still have to be passed at the same level as the regular test and still get a regular diploma. Be very sure that you are not getting out of the regular diploma by changing to an alternate assessment.

I do not understand your question about looking for a non-allowable accommodation for the US History test, however.

Thanks Janis for your reply, Yes this is with a diploma. They are compling work, previous tests, etc. The state of Mississippi will allow this. I think it is great. I also feel that this is a more accurate way to show what a child knows. The second part of the question was about a non allowable accom. In order for a child to have an alternate assessment, they have to have a non allowable accom that is required in order for them to participate. The non allowable for English for example was a dictionary. The dictionary was not an allowable accom. in our states list. Now we are looking for that non allowable accom. for History. He can have a reader, a scribe, extra time, small group, they will even give him the test over a period of several days. The problem here is that he does not do multiple choice guestions well. I have not viewed the test so I can’t say how it’s laid out. Thanks for any help you could pass along.Elaine wrote:

One of accommodations that I received is that I’m allowed to tape my essay questions. The other thing you could ask for is for a straight essay exam. That is a reasonable accommodation. What about the dictionary ?

Those are the only thing I can think of rights now.

Sincerely,
See
