Phonics/Reading programs for home use

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 5 yr old is LD and has phonological processing problems and is having difficulty with putting the sounds with the letter. I would like to find a program to do at home especially for the summer months. What program has been most successful for you?

At this age, put most of the focus on the sounds. http://www.auburn.edu/~murraba has some great resources and ideas for building sound and sound/letter knowledge. Start wiht the ones you can say for ever (sssss, mmmmm, lllllll, ffffff) and work in the harder ones by August or so :)

Dee,

I would recommend that you buy books the beginning books from the Explode the Code series from EPS (http://www.epsbooks.com/). They are Get Ready ofr the Code (A), Get Set for the Code (B), Go for the Code (C) (these teach the consonant sounds), and then Explode the Code Book 1 (short vowels). Then I would begin the book “Reading Reflex” by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness which is under $12 at Amazon to teach him how to read.

Dee, sorry, I forgot one more thing. Please buy the CD-rom called Earobics 1.(home version $59). It is great for those early phonemic skills! www.earobics.com
