iep for next year

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi My dd has an iep this year. as I understand it its supposed to be revised at the end of each year. We are going to move this summer to a differant school dist. How does this effect her iep? does the new dist retest themselves or do they just use the one from her old school? Thanks
dj

This may depend upon where you live, and where you are moving to. In NJ, an IEP moves with the child. The new district then has time to see if evaluations are necessary and to re-write the IEP. You should go forward with your annual review and give the new district plentyl of time for you to meet with them and complete the new IEP before school starts. If she is due of reevlauation, you may want to contact the new district even earlier and see if they want your current district to do the reeval or they may want to do it themselves.

In our district, the old IEP follows the student. I would, however, make sure I got everything I wanted and very well spelled out before I moved.

In my experience as well, the IEP follows the student. I’d suggest that you meet with your current school to have them write an IEP, and then schedule a meeting with the new school either during preplanning or before this school year ends to review the IEP.

Most likely the new school will want to tweak the IEP. Forms change from district to district, for one thing, and the new school may have a bigger toolbox than the old school, so they may want to revise or rewrite goals. It’s also nice for you to be able to meet the sped staff before the school year begins.

If you contact them now, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get an IEP meeting scheduled so that they are well-prepared for your daughter before the first day of school.
