Next week I am scheduled to attend the year end iep meeting and iep planning for next year. I am planning on homeschooling next year to get intensive cognitive and reading therapies for my child. He has made comments at school and to the teacher such as “he won’t be back next year because he will be going to a different school focusing more on reading.” My question is if the teacher brings this conversation up during the iep meeting should I pretend that it’s news to me or that I am planning outside tutoring for next year or tell the truth or just avoid the comment and change the subject? This teacher is scheduled to be the same teacher for him next year. He also has speech and OT for writing there which will also be in the iep.
Re: year end iep and homeschooling next year
That is true. I will wash my hands of iep and public school if I homeschool.
I guess I didn’t want to burn my bridges at this time in case we accomplish more in the summer than I think will happen and decided to go back to public school.
Re: year end iep and homeschooling next year
then this is kind of what I would say.
The decision to homeschool has not been made. We are looking at this as a possible option,it depends on how much progress we make during the summer. End of discussion..
Re: year end iep and homeschooling next year
I would keep all options open — as Socks said, tell them that you are considering it as an option but the decision has not been made (if it comes up). You also want to keep up your documentation for down the road if you want accommodations for testing and that sort of thing.
thank you socks and Sue
Thank you to both of you. Teacher emailed me Friday with several things and she did mention that my child had told her again that he wasn’t returning to school next year; that he was going to homeschool; and she did question me.
I had that sneaky feeling it would come up.
Re: thank you socks and Sue
I’ve been on the teacher end of that — we just acted as if the kiddo’s returning, do the paperwork… and if s/he didn’t show up in the fall, um…. frankly, I felt grateful that my caseload was lower than it appeared, and that a student was probably getting better than what our school would provide.
If you are planning on homeschooling next year, you won’t need an IEP, will you? What are you planning for? At least in NJ, if you homeschool, you don’t get an IEP or any related services - you’ve basically washed your hands of the district services.
