FFW at home

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

There were a couple of recent posts where people had done FFW with their kids at home. I thought they only sold FFW to “credentialed” providers. Is it possible and effective to do it yourself?

You have to become certified. This was awhile ago, but as I recall, you follow the educator in the web site. They send you a manual and you have to take a test. It wasn’t that hard—the harder part was figuring out in real time some of the uploading. But then I am not very good with computers. (So, if I can do it, you can too!)

It was $100 three years ago and saved me the price of a provider. The provider I spoke to was going to have me do it at home anyway for several thousand dollars. I guess she would have interpreted the data for me. It wasn’t that hard to figure out, though.

We have students who are register to an “off-site” location. I enroll them, but they do the program at home under parental supervision. I can still bring up their scores and monitor their progress.

Our school district made it very clear they weren’t going to pay for it!!! Too experimental ect. but they all agreed that his attention was much better afterwards. It does help if you understand what is going on around you.

Sorry your district would not provide. Some districts, SELPAs (special ed areas) do provide FFW. If there are other districts in your area, you might find out if any of them are paying for FFW. Of course, to be cost effective the district should be providing it themselves, not paying an outside provider.

Angela, how do you find out about other districts? We’re part of LAUSD which has subdistricts. A school pretty nearby is in a different subdistrict than ours. I’ve asked our special ed coordinator if she knows anyone there because I’ve heard they have a larger population of ld kids (our school has ver few) and I’d like to find out what they are doing over there, or even if a special day class there would be appropriate for my child. Her answer is, it’s not our district. Any advice?
