question for the board:
I have an assistive tech eval meeting coming up for my 3rd grader.
I’d like him to use an alphasmart but i suspect school will
turn down my request.altho he has signifigantwriting issues.
Question: Can i just buy one and send it to school with him after
I’ve taught him how to use it? Was hoping to get his typing up to speed
an was wondering if i need the school’s OK to send him with it.
thanks for your help.
Re: alpha smart
Honestly, I would try to get the school to provide. If he has writing issues, or can’t copy from the board, that is significant and they should provide.
You have enough money to spend on different therapies. Schools usually have Alphasmarts “lying around” to use.
We spend thousands of dollars a year on therapies. My feeling is that the school should be willing to at least meet me 1/2 way - i.e., providing those things they already have in the system for use.
I would think the school would be happy that you are providing the alpha smart yourself. Since he will be using it in class, you should talk with the school and specifically with his teacher about its use in the classroom. The teacher may have ideas about how to make it easier and more convenient for classroom use. One of the files could be designated for home/school communication and you and the teacher could communicate regularly on the alphasmart.
