Need advice on dealing w/ public school and dyslexia program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My daughter’s public school system has a good program for dyslexia but it doesn’t begin until 3rd grade. This is totally ridiculous because here in Texas, children must pass the TAKS test in order to pass 3rd grade. If dyslexia can be predicted in these children as early as kindergarten, then why shouldn’t the school provide provide services earlier than 3rd grade? What can I do about this? My dd will be given some accomodations next year through her speech therapy, but not nearly enough help to satisfy me. Where do I start?

seems like to me,they do provide title I for this grade level? I know a couple people in Texas who would definitely know how to help you.

Go to www.net-haven.net at 9pm tonight EST. It is a chat and their are two people there, one is Pendesk and great advocate,if she doesn’t know how to get her services, she will know how to get around it. The other one is BE who is a title I teacher who teaches dyslexic children to read. 1st grade too. Thinking someone is not telling you the whole story.

I just read Overcoming Dislexia by Sally Shaywitz, MD. It is new, its the best book I.ve read on the subject. It’s full or research based evidence on the most appropriate methods of intervention and when intervention should begin. It’s full of suggestons on how to advocate for your child and what is reasonable to expect from the school. My daughter has dyslexia and I highly recommend the book. Schools find it very difficult to argue with good reseach. Good luck. This book helped us draft a good IEP.

I just started reading that book! It does seem to be full of good advice and info. I can hardly wait for her testing this week to determine if she really has it, although in my heart, I already know the answer. I am seriously considering driving her to a LD school that has uses multi sensory programs to help. I just don’t think I’ll get much help from my SD.
