laptop note book

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 16 year old son has, just this past month, been diagnosed with ADHA (attention only). One of the recomendations is that he use a computer notebook for most if not all written work do to his spelling and punctuation(grammer). This is so he can receive the teaching he needs but also help him to stay up with assignments.
My problem is that at this time the school budget does not have the funding and I don’t either. Does anyone know of any resources that I may be able to contact for some help with this matter.

Others may be able to give you more information, but there is a small, sturdy word processor called an Alpha Smart that runs about $300. Some schools have them around from a typing class. It has about 8 files that your son can designate for an organizer and individual classes or projects. Check under Finding Help - Technology for more information.

Our district supplies these to dyslexic students. I always assumed (and we all know what that means) that all districts did. If it is in the IEP, they must supply the assisstive technology.

What state are you in? Try the local Knights of Columbus, Lyons Club, PTO, etc. etc. Try the local paper’s ads and let everyone know that you’re looking for a used laptop, some corporations dispose of them to local charities. In our town in Mass. there is no money in the budget for any technology and everyone is scrambling.
