Past years WWJ now WIAT?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Did Woodcock Johnson test 1st grade, did different version 2nd grade and 3rd grade with theWoodcock Johnson III. Now learning support is telling me my child needs to take a different test the WIAT because she is used to the WWJ. I know when it changed the first time I saw a decline in my child when I compared the scores and was told no- it is a different version she is doing fine it is not as bad as it looks. I know about the percentage ranking now and I am graphing my child but the change in the test is bothering me, since I won’t be comparing the same test. Is there a way to get them to use the same test? Are they correct in telling me it won’t be accurate since she has taken the test before? Thanks for your input.

My first question is “why all the testing?” Every year you could do functional/portfolio assessment of what gains your child is making. There is NO NEED to do a full battery of standardized testing every year! and you’re right. Children become familiar with a testing format- it’s called “test re-test factor”, and does negate some of the reliability of the test.
Rely on the goals and objectives of the IEP. How’s she doing on working towards meetign them? Use that as your gage for progress…..not standardized tests. YOu’ll drive yourself (and your CST) crazy!
