Can anyone recommend any good computer software programs to use over the summer for a child in reading or math? This would be for adolescents who are approx 2 to 3 years behind grade level. Just looking for some good ideas for computer software a parent can use at home over the summer. Feedback is appreciated. Thanks!!
Lexia Learning
www.lexialearning.com has “Strategies for Older Students” which works on the decoding level w/ games — IMO the best out there for that. They have a “family” version that’s cheaper than what they sell to schools. It has much better feedback (will advance or not advance studetns depending on how they’re doing, tho’ parent can override) and just better design than most of what’s out there.
It depends what they need work on, but here are some suggestions: for math facts—Quartermile Math; for reading fluency—Read Naturally (it goes to seventh grade level, which is probably high enough for developing high school level fluency). Visionbuilder is a computer program that has a component aimed at increasing the speed at which your eyes move across a line of text, which will help build up reading speed. For algebra, Videotext is not a computer game, but a highly acclaimed video teaching program. The Institute for Excellence in Writing also has a short self-directed video writing program called the Student Intensive Workshop.
