Top Ten signs … That you’re going to have a bad IEP meeting
By Colleen F. Tomko
10. The IEP invitation lists “drive-thru” hours.
9. When you get to the meeting, the staff want to know what you are doing there.
8. They give you complimentary white flags and tissues.
7. Your child’s student ID # is 666.
6. They try to convince you that the attending speech therapist really is the janitor’s identical twin.
5. You find yourself explaining that… the regs say they can use IU’s for related services, not I-O-U’s.
4. The special ed coordinator says ‘Have we got a place for your kid”.
3. They think “inclusion” is some type of venereal desease.
2. The staff is bumming because their label maker burned out.
1. You over hear the staff talking about the Least “Resisted” Environment.
Re: a little levity for the IEP Season upon us...
OMG, I needed that. I’m wondering if my son’s principal has enough of a sense of humor for me to send this to him. HILARIOUS!

You’re told, “Gosh, your kid is doing so well, he no longer needs services! He’ll be up to grade level in no time!”
I knew it was going bad when..
We spent 10 minutes over my wanting to have the personal contacts(e.g, telephone, notes, etc.) checked on the IEP form,so I could make sure I had that option to be reported what progress toward the goal had been made by phone.Speech instructor finally said she always checks it and did not see why it was a problem.(Yeah) an ali -Then I found out she is leaving and won’t be there next year. Here we go again with a new speech pathologist.

I did send it to him via e-mail. He replied to thank me, and to tell me that he really thought it was funny. Any icebreaker will do!
Thanks again for sharing this funny!

Re: I knew it was going bad when..
You have to ask in writing for a private meeting location for an iep when a student is present—a glassed in room in the library, that anyone can see in and anything can be heard is not private in my view—but in the school’s view it was good enough….
Re: #13 "It wasn't a REAL CSE"
Today I was told the meeting I had end of May “wasn’t really a CSE” even though I got the meeting invitation in writing with all the due process, prior written notice stuff.
Seems when I put in writing that I disagreed with the conclusions reached that day (declassification not transition), it was patiently explained to me that was the practice run.
I’m getting too tired for this.
Oh, D.....
I’m so sorry! It should be that hard!
It is tiring. You can do what ever it takes to get your child what she needs! Keep it up, D!
